Vidcon announced on Instagram that it would be canceling the annaul event held at the Anaheim Convention Center. The highly anticipated social media gathering is added to a growing list of media events to be canceled as a result of Covid-19.
“We were so excited about the 11th annual VidCon US, but our number one priority is always the safety and health of our attendees, sponsors, speakers, creators, and staff. Unfortunately, due to the continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, and the precautions being taken by authorities worldwide to manage this pandemic, we have come to the difficult decision to cancel VidCon this June." said Jim Louderback, GM of VidCon.
All purchases for the event will be fully refunded in the next few days. Vidcon also announced it has plans to move the event to this fall. "We are working hard to bring you a VidCon US experience this fall, and will keep you posted as those details come together. Don’t worry; it will still be an amazing event that you won’t want to miss!" They said in a statement.
It's not known wether the deferral will come to fruition. "We will share details with you as soon as we can, but no later than June 15,2020! Be sure to keep an eye out for updates on our website." Vidcon announced in a Twitter Video.
Fans/Content Creators of the event remain hopeful as Coachella was postponed for this fall as well.
The news does not come as a shocker to some as the Mayor of California ordered its residents "to stay inside their homes and immediately limit all nonessential movement."
It's likely more cultural/media events will be cancelled within the next few weeks. To keep up to date, visit The New York Times' list of cancelled events.
