James Charles Receives Backlash After Participating in #MugshotChallenge

Sadly, it never ends for him.

James Charles was criticized by his followers after posting pictures of him appearing bruised and beat up. This was his innocent take on the #MugshotChallenge which encourages users to post pictures of what their mugshots would look like. The trend originated on TikTok and wasn't long before it went viral. It's a chance for people to showcase their makeup skills but for James, who isn't shy of getting caught in scandals – most just being haters, was accused of romanticizing domestic violence.

"You know I had to have two nose surgeries due to domestic violence. My nose is still crooked. I am reminded of those moments every day. This is not a subject matter to take lightly," said one user, "You should know better. You need to apologize to everyone. This is triggering and offensive."

Another user mentioned, "it's not fun having your face bruised up." to which James replied, "hi babe, I’m so sorry that you went through something so awful and traumatic. it’s a tik tok trend going around where people post their “mugshots” and has nothing to do with domestic violence whatsoever. love you"

It's unfair to target James Charles specifically as other influencers posted their own versions of #MughshotChallenge such as video game streamer/influencer Corina Kopf, TikTok star Loren Gray, and YouTuber Brennen Taylor.

Due to the volume of tweets James was receiving, he opted to delete the images.

"despite the fact that hundreds of other influencers and artists have done something similar," he said, "I deleted the mugshot trend because it was never my intention to trigger anyone & it's a waste of time trying to have an open discussion with people who hate me regardless."

In a now-deleted tweet, James calls out people for not giving the same energy to The Weeknd and Billie Eilish who both have used signs of gore for album covers. "The weeknd's new album shows him bleeding with a broken nose, and with bruises, yet I haven't seen a single tweet about him glorifying violence or abuse?" He says.

This wasn't meant to be malicious towards either artists later replying to his own tweet "I love both of these artists SO MUCH, i'm just actually asking a question to have an open discussion."
