Social Media Personalities Take Over Superbowl Commercials

Every year, we all get together on Superbowl Sunday for the games but others, like myself, look forward to the commercials – ranking them from best to worst and taking note of which brands topped themselves from their previous commercials.

In recent years, we've had internet personalities like popular Fortnite streamer "Ninja" appear in an NFL commercial and YouTuber Colleen Ballinger appear in a DiGiorno Ad.

Sabra

This year, Sabra's commercial for Superbowl LIV took it to the next level by adding a ton of viral social media influencers and internet personalities. Appearing in the 50-second video are people who have just dipped their toes into the world of going viral, world champions, and dancers. Yes, I'm talking about Brittney Broski (Brittney Tomlinson) otherwise known as "Kombucha girl" after posting her viral TikTok where she decided whether or not drinking kombucha was "it." Her quirky personality and comedy have launched her into stardom amassing a total of 2.7 million followers on TikTok.

Charli D'Amelio, dubbed the Queen of Tiktok by her viewers, follows in the same footsteps having gone viral after posting a series of dance videos on the famous app. Reading only the line "OK Boomer," – a word to describe annoyance towards a person born between 1946-1964 that birthed on the app, – Charli is just one of the many faces recognized in the commercial. Ironically, Charli says this to former NFL Quarterback Boomer Esiason.

Other people like Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf (winner of the first Fortnite World Cup in 2019), Zachary King (famous for his magic tricks and transitions who started on Vine), Amanda Cerny (comedian/influencer also started on Vine) and celebrities like singer-songwriter Becky G and sapper Meg Thee Stallion, are of the 17 faces showing love to the renowned hummus.

Sabra becomes the top commercials for including that many internet-based celebrities but wasn't the only one to take this liking.

NFL Next 100

Following in his streamer buddy's footsteps, Timothy John Betar, better known as "TimtheTatman" – one of Twitch's top streamers and partners – appears in the NFL Next 100 commercial.

Planter's Peanuts

After the release of The Mandalorian on Disney+, the introduction of "The Child," aka Baby Yoda, melted the internet with its cuteness. What better way to win over an audience, right? Well, that's exactly what Planter's Peanuts team decided was the direction they wanted to go through. Starting off with an ad a few days before the big game, we're hit with the unfortunate news that Mr. Peanut had sadly passed away. They had us fooled for a couple of days, allowing us to mourn the death of the beloved peanut man, only to surprise us with a rebirth at his funeral, thus the introduction of Baby Nut. Even I let out an "aw" as I watched the commercial.

Olay

"Is there enough space...in space…for women?"

Olay brings awareness to the importance of women in the STEM workforce with the help of powerful women like Astronaut Nicole Stott, Actresses Busy Philipps and Taraji P. Henson, and comedian Lilly Singh who many know her as IISuperwomanII from YouTube. Singh and Philipps urge the viewers to tweet #MAKESPACEFORWOMEN. For every tweet, a $1 gets donated to Girls Who Code.

It's likely with the success and influence of internet personalities, we'll be seeing more in the future Superbowl commercials, and I'll be there to watch!
