These Movies are Getting Early Streaming Releases!

Updated: Mar 24, 2020

As the time we spend at home increasingly grows, there's only so much content we can watch on Netflix and Youtube. Luckily, it's been announced that many movies that recently hit theatres will be released early via different streaming platforms.

Disney+ announced it will be releasing Frozen 2 early in March on its Twitter account.

Bob Chapek the Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company says "Frozen 2 has captivated audiences around the world through its powerful themes of perseverance and the importance of family, messages that are incredibly relevant during this time, and we are pleased to be able to share this heartwarming story early with our Disney+ subscribers to enjoy at home on any device."

Onward, which was recently released in theatres, was announced to have an early release in April following its not-so-hot box office revenue on opening weekend. “While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae said in a statement. Although the film didn't do too bad bringing in approximately $40 million dollars on its opening weekend, it's evident the film suffered in revenue due to many people taking appropriate action about going to places with large gatherings.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was also announced to be available for streaming and will be added to Disney+ on March 13.

These releases are in efforts to help comfort those practicing social distancing to have something positive to watch during this difficult time.

Universal Picture's follows in Disney+ announcing Emma, The Invisible Man, Trolls World Tour, The Hunt, Sonic the Hedgehog, etc. will be available for streaming earlier than expected.

Paramount's unreleased Love Birds is the latest unreleased movie to be sent straight to streaming and the first to be available on Netflix. According to Deadline, the film has been in talks to be streamed exclusively on Netflix. "A streaming date for the title will be announced soon. I hear the deal is being papered at the moment. Details in regards to foreign are forthcoming, but I believe this was a global deal." said Anthony D'Alessandro for Deadline. The movie was set to premiere at SXSW which was canceled earlier this month in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Birds of Prey's director Cathy Yan announced on Twitter that the girl-power action-packed film will be available for digital rental earlier than expected. "Woohoo! Birds of Prey will in fact be available for digital rental on March 24!" Yan said, "Thanks to all the fans and supporters out there. I’m just happy people will be able to enjoy new and fun movies right now."

Unfortunately, films like No Time to Die have been given a later release date for this year. The Fast Saga's 9th installment F9 announced it has moved to premiere in April next year. Marvel's highly-anticipated Black Widow movie was pulled from its theatrical release and the premiere date is to be announced. Rumors have been swirling online that the stand-alone movie will be released on Disney+ following an alleged employee's (who claims works at a company tied to Black Widow merchandising) post on 4Chan "So we were originally told that the movie was still being released on May 1st, however, nine days ago we were told to also redo everything for November 6th, 2020. TODAY, we were told that it will depend on how the FANS-WTF-react to the news of pushbacks and how The Rise of Skywalker performs being released early," they continue, "But before we could finish anything we were told to STOP everything. So now our company is waiting around for news on what to do." It's not quite clear how credible this source may be but it wouldn't be surprising to see Black Widow move to streaming and digital downloads before the end of the year.
